Animal health and welfare<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0are research themes with a multispecies nature, supported by several underlying veterinary disciplines, such as epidemiology, virology, parasitology and bacteriology, and the scientific domains of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>ethology<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, preventive\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>veterinary medicine<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, and stress physiology. The\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP)<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0organises a monthly series of webinars to inform, update, and disseminate the latest scientific literature through high-profile speakers to the EAAP individual members.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>The 17th EAAP Webinar<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>Promoting animal health and welfare via pathogens control<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u201c, organised in collaboration with the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>EAAP Commission on Animal Health & Welfare<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, aimed to support\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>scientific debate<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0on issues related to the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>health and well-being of all livestock species.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The presentation by\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Christian Ducrot<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0from INRAE, in France, focused on \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>Animal health and welfare via pathogens control<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u201c, and it took an interdisciplinary approach towards\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>animal health<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>welfare of farm animals<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. The presentation began by explaining the traditional farming approach to improving animal health, which is centred around protecting animals from pathogens, which also protects human health. This approach involves\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>biosecurity measures<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0to prevent contact with infectious threats,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>vaccination<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and eradication plans to control specific infectious diseases, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>keeping animals indoors to control various environmental infectious and parasitic diseases<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. Control of pathogens is one of the main means of prevention used by\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>veterinarians<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0to protect animal health on farms, as are\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>good environmental conditions and nutrition<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0to support resistance to infections and boost immunity,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>decreasing the need for antibiotics<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Today, some farmers tend to\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>refuse antibiotic treatment<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0for diseased animals to keep the \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>antibiotic-free<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u201d label. But\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>this can cause poor animal health and have a negative welfare impact<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0since antibiotics in certain conditions are necessary for good animal health and welfare. For this reason, there is a strong demand by veterinarians and parts of the livestock sector for\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>health and welfare monitoring tools and indicators<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0on farms, which are better for tracking the need and the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>use of antimicrobials<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. The same could arise for\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>parasitic control<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Good animal health is one component that feeds into an animal\u2019s overall welfare standard. That said, it is evident that any disease-inducing pain, suffering, and decreased physical skills will impact that\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>animal\u2019s welfare<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, so we can state that\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>controlling pathogens<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0results in fewer diseases, better animal health and, consequently, better overall welfare. But there are also conflicting aspects between pathogen control and welfare. As previously determined,<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>pathogen control<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0positively impacts animal and human health in the context of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>zoonotic diseases<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and remains a primary means to control infectious diseases.\u00a0 However, most means of pathogen control decrease the freedom of animals to express normal behaviour, such as outdoor exploring and foraging. So, how can we balance its positive and adverse events?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There are different perceptions about the relationship between\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>animal health and welfare<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. The main goal of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>veterinarians<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is to keep animals in good health, while some farmers prioritise maintaining good health and emphasising their\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>animals\u2019 well-being<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. And, of course, nowadays, the point of view of\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>citizens and consumers<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0has a huge impact on the future of how we farm animals.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>A systematic review<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0of public attitudes, perceptions and behaviours towards livestock production diseases associated with\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>farm animal welfare<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0indicates that the most concerned by welfare considerations are women, young generations and people with higher education. Moreover, the measurement of naturalness is another central component in determining animal welfare because it concerns\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>animal behaviours<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and living conditions, such as\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>enough space<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, freedom to behave according to\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>natural instincts<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and outdoor access. A farm animal\u2019s ability to exhibit natural behaviours is so vital to its overall welfare that efforts to protect health at the expense of naturalness are not supported. Depending on the stakeholders,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>pathogen control<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0should not be preferred at any cost.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>A balance needs to be analysed<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>, which may depend on the dangerousness of the pathogens, zoonotic risk, and crucial aspects of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>control measures<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>. Societal concern tends to favour naturalness to the detriment of animal health and the need for justification, explanation and communication to implement strong disease control measures.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
