Maybe only at Harvard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>Despite the best studies denying it for at least two decades, there are those at Harvard (!) who continue to argue, against all evidence, that red meat causes type 2 diabetes. Why is this?<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The campaign against red meat seems to have no end in sight. Experts have started asking themselves questions and wondering why such an unjustified fury exists. <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unsettledscience.substack.com\/p\/harvard-has-been-anti-meat-for-30?r=4uucw&amp;utm_campaign=post&amp;utm_medium=web\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Nina Teicholz<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, a science communicator, reveals<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> that the man behind it all is Dr <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Walter C. Willett<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, who for 25 years has chaired the Department of Nutrition at the influential Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) and is <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>a staunch advocate of a vegetarian diet<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">His crusade against meat has no scientific basis but is a mixture of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>personal ambition<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>financial interest and prejudice<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. In short, it is a clear example of bad science, characterising <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/article\/S0002-9165(23)66119-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">his latest study<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. In it, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Willett<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> argues that consumption of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>red meat and cured meats<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> is strongly associated with an increased <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>risk of type 2 diabetes<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. It is an observational cohort study, which means it is of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>low scientific quality<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> because it cannot prove causality and is full of confounding factors.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>NOT A STRICTLY SCIENTIFIC STUDY<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">For example, the definition of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>red meat<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> here includes lasagne and sandwiches, which is very wrong if you want to assess a <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>food&#8217;s effect on health<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> strictly. In this case, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>the study is inaccurate<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> because the risk may be caused by bread, chips or sugary fizzy drinks eaten with meat, not by the meat itself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The study&#8217;s results have attracted the interest of the press, which immediately ran <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>sensational headlines<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. On the contrary, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>scientists who understand science<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> remain astonished by this type of publication since there are <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41430-022-01150-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">meta-analyses<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2161831322003696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">systematic reviews<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>excellent scientific quality<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> that have already demonstrated that <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>meat does not increase blood glucose,<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>insulin resistance, inflammation and the risk of type 2 diabetes<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. That meat does not cause diabetes is also clear from the trend in the incidence of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>the disease<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which has <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>increased as meat consumption has decreased<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> while its carbohydrate-rich substitutes have increased. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Meat does not contain sugar<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, it does not cause a spike in blood sugar, and diabetes is a recent disease, whereas we have been eating meat for thousands of years.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">But the definitive proof comes from <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>phase 3 research<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, the many clinical trials of the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>highest scientific rigour<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which show that by <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>encouraging people to eat more red meat<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>by eliminating grains, starches and sugars, it is even possible to reverse type 2 diabetes<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and make the symptoms of diabetes disappear after a diet rich in red meat. In practice, research on this subject has reached its final stage, refuting the original hypothesis. Instead, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Willett continues to publish phase 1 studies on the hypothesis, providing the click-hungry media with false results<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. Even his second phase studies failed to confirm his hypothesis, as he admits in his conclusions that &#8220;An effect &#8220;has not been seen&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>ULTRA-PROCESSED PLANT FOODS<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Yet <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>it deliberately ignores the evidence and promotes plant protein sources<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> as healthier and better for the planet when the opposite is true. On the contrary, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>it is<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>ultra-processed plant foods full of additives, starches, sugars, refined oils and hydrogenated <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">fats <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/eurheartj\/article\/43\/3\/213\/6446064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">that increase the risk<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> of cardiovascular disease, stroke, obesity and diabetes. So <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>why deny the evidence<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and continue to fight against meat when all nutritionists support its vital role in a complete diet for its irreplaceable nutritional value?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">&#8220;The reason is quickly explained,&#8221; <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Nina Teicholz<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> comments: &#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>For 30 years, Willett has been driven by ideological beliefs<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, linked to a true church that promotes veganism, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>with undeniable conflicts of financial interest<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> that interfere with the pure pursuit of science. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>This is worrying<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> because Willett is the author of nearly 100 academic papers on red meat and disease, all based on <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>assumptions<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. The experiment has confirmed none of his findings on red meat. If I assume that perfume is bad for the lungs, I have to test the hypothesis before I tell the press. Otherwise, I could cause people to avoid perfume unnecessarily and do irreparable damage to the perfume companies. However, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Willett has released his hypotheses to the media for years without testing or even when the tests prove the opposite<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. Harvard&#8217;s public relations team almost always releases his articles to the press, generating <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>ubiquitous headlines<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. His goal is for his beliefs to reach the highest echelons of power and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>influence global policy recommendations<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #121212;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>CONFLICT OF INTEREST<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Willett also co-chaired the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>EAT-Lancet Commission<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which developed the almost meat-free <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Universal Diet<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2019\/07\/01\/EAT-Lancet-diet-s-protein-requirements-nutritionally-inadequate-says-sustainability-campaigner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">which all experts<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, including <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanplh\/article\/PIIS2542-5196(23)00006-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The Lancet itself<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>considered deficient and harmful to health<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. &#8220;Its anti-scientific activism and its vegetarian roots in the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Seventh Day Adventist Church<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which promotes a <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>vegan diet as a religious creed<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, do serious damage,&#8221; continues the science communicator: &#8220;In addition, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Harvard has received and continues to receive large donations<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> from foundations interested in environmental sustainability and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>from companies producing vegetarian foods<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> that advocate the elimination of meat consumption.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Yet Willett almost always declares in his papers that he has no <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>conflicts of interest<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> despite his long-standing commitment to vegetarianism or financial interests. He is seen as an objective source, and the Harvard name is a guarantee. &#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>The way science has been degraded is worrying<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">,&#8221; the expert explains: &#8220;With Harvard, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities, promoting dubious and disproved hypotheses as a basis for public policy, we have lost our scientific anchor. The first phase of any research, the generation of hypotheses, should be carried out without too much media attention. Once an idea is spread, for example, that <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>meat causes diabetes<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, it is difficult to retract it and explain how things stand.
