Everyone is worried about their methane emissions. But are cows the real culprits when it comes to climate change? The answer is no. Far from being the problem, cattle farms could be part of the solution to the <strong>climate crisis<\/strong>. Although cow methane has a greenhouse effect 28 times greater than CO2 emitted from burning<strong> oil and coal<\/strong>, it remains in the atmosphere for only ten years, whereas carbon dioxide lasts centuries. So, it makes no sense to measure the <strong>environmental impact of farms in terms of<\/strong> <strong>CO2 equivalent.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?text=Almost%20no%20one%20seems%20to%20accept%20the%20fact%20that%20%23livestock%20is%20not%20the%20problem%2C%20but%20on%20the%20contrary%20could%20and%20should%20be%20part%20of%20the%20%23ClimateSolution.&#038;related=SostenCarni&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.carnisostenibili.it%2Fen%2F%3Fp%3D22922&#038;via=SostenCarni' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Almost no one seems to accept the fact that #livestock is not the problem, but on the contrary could and should be part of the #ClimateSolution. <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?text=Almost%20no%20one%20seems%20to%20accept%20the%20fact%20that%20%23livestock%20is%20not%20the%20problem%2C%20but%20on%20the%20contrary%20could%20and%20should%20be%20part%20of%20the%20%23ClimateSolution.&#038;related=SostenCarni&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.carnisostenibili.it%2Fen%2F%3Fp%3D22922&#038;via=SostenCarni' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Methane<\/strong> is a powerful climate-altering gas, but in addition to cows, it is produced by <strong>rice fields, swamps, landfills<\/strong>, even by the oceans and by the <strong>extraction of fossil fuels<\/strong>, whose emissions are even higher than expected: <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/9efb310e-94d7-4c46-817b-9493fe5abb0a\/Theimperativeofcuttingmethanefromfossilfuels.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new research reveals<\/a> that the impact of the extraction of fossil fuels (<strong>gas, coal and oil<\/strong>) and <strong>fugitive emissions accounts for 34% of anthropogenic methane<\/strong>. In comparison, <strong>methane from livestock farming accounts for 27%<\/strong> and landfills for 23%. The remaining share of methane of anthropogenic origin (16%) comes from other agricultural activities.<\/p>\n<p>In the livestock sector, many steps forward have been made to <strong>reduce methane production <\/strong>through<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnisostenibili.it\/en\/strong-reductions-in-methane-from-animal-feed\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">feed additives<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> or anaerobic digesters. For example, a <strong>probiotic<\/strong> consisting of three strains of bacteria has been developed, which, when added to feed, <strong>can reduce methane by 68%<\/strong>, while another consisting of a single strain of microbial bacteria can achieve a <strong>reduction of 78%<\/strong>. These are the same carbon molecules in the plant eaten by the animal, so the carbon removed from the atmosphere by the plant is returned to the atmosphere in a <strong>closed cycle<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">&#8220;In short, it is<strong> &#8220;recycled&#8221; carbon<\/strong>,<strong> also known as biogenic carbon<\/strong>, which goes through a cycle and is very different from fossil carbon, which instead follows a one-way path from bottom to top in the air,&#8221; Professor Mitloehner points out: &#8220;<strong>If we keep the number of animals reared constant, the amount of methane produced by the cows and the amount of methane destroyed are in equilibrium.<\/strong> This means no new carbon is added to the atmosphere, and we have no additional warming&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/x.com\/intent\/tweet?text=The%20%23CarbonDioxide%20emitted%2020%20years%20ago%20by%20%23car%20or%20%23plane%20is%20still%20in%20the%20%23atmosphere%20and%20will%20remain%20there%20for%20centuries.%20The%20%23methane%20emitted%20by%20the%20digestion%20of%20%23cattle%20is%20not.&#038;related=SostenCarni&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.carnisostenibili.it%2Fen%2F%3Fp%3D22922&#038;via=SostenCarni' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The #CarbonDioxide emitted 20 years ago by #car or #plane is still in the #atmosphere and will remain there for centuries. On the other hand, <strong>the carbon dioxide produced by fossil fuels is a reserve gas that accumulates in the atmosphere<\/strong>. In practice, the carbon dioxide emitted today is added to the carbon dioxide emitted yesterday, which was added to the carbon dioxide emitted the day before, and so on. Even the carbon dioxide you may have emitted twenty years ago when you travelled by car or plane is still in the atmosphere and will remain there for centuries. When you reduce methane, you create a powerful cooling effect, which means that cows are an important part of the solution to reducing our overall climate impact&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><strong>Agriculture and livestock are the only human activities where carbon emissions and sequestration occur simultaneously<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41612-018-0026-8\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">In Italy, new studies<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> with <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/1828051X.2023.2167616?src=\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">updated metrics<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which for the first time take into account the <strong>differences between methane and CO2<\/strong>, confirm that in the last ten years, <strong>farms have not affected the climate but have helped to cool the atmosphere with negative emissions of -49 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Rethinking methane allows us to focus on both short- and long-term climate solutions while continuing to work to feed a growing population, experts say.
