Challenges for the balanced attribution of livestock’s environmental impacts: the art of conveying simple messages around complex realities.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Meat production, particularly beef, is often cited as a major contributor to <\/span><\/span>climate change<\/b><\/span><\/span> due to its impact on <\/span><\/span>methane emissions<\/b><\/span><\/span> and land use, biodiversity loss, feed-food competition, and <\/span><\/span>water scarcity<\/b><\/span><\/span>. However, <\/span><\/span>environmental assessments of livestock are frequently oversimplified<\/b><\/span><\/span>, ignoring the <\/span><\/span>complexities and variations<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> within the sector. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For example, <\/span><\/span>comparing livestock-associated greenhouse gases (CO<\/b><\/span><\/span>2<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sub>, CH<\/b><\/span><\/span>4<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sub>, and N<\/b><\/span><\/span>2<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sub>O) using simplistic metrics like CO<\/b><\/span><\/span>2<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sub>-equivalents fails to account for their different atmospheric behaviours and kinetics<\/b><\/span><\/span>. Methane (CH<\/span><\/span>4<\/span><\/span><\/sub>) from livestock is part of a biological cycle and rapidly breaks down in the atmosphere, unlike CO<\/span><\/span>2<\/span><\/span><\/sub> mobilised from fossil fuel stores, which accumulates in the atmosphere. Given its short-lived nature, <\/span><\/span>the GWP* metric <\/b><\/span><\/span>has been developed<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> to reflect CH4’s impact on warming accurately<\/b><\/span><\/span>. This underlines that choosing the right metric in the function of the topic under scrutiny is paramount to having a fair and robust evaluation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The #methane produced by #livestock is part of a #BiologicalCycle and breaks down quickly in the atmosphere, unlike the #CO2 from #FossilFuels accumulating in the atmosphere. <\/a><\/span>Share on X<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Assessments of land use, usage and pollution of water by livestock equally suffer from oversimplification. <\/span><\/span>Adequate manners of livestock production can have multiple <\/b><\/span><\/span>positive effects<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> on both land and water resources<\/b><\/span><\/span>, such as improving the organic soil carbon levels of degraded lands and valorising non-arable lands unsuitable for crop production. <\/span><\/span>Managed livestock can enhance the water-holding capacity of soils and reduce the runoff of pollutants in waterways<\/b><\/span><\/span>. Livestock, especially ruminants on grasslands, mostly use rainwater (which would fall anyway). Although water for feed irrigation can be problematic, this highly depends on the production context. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, <\/span><\/span>evaluations using environmental metrics should also consider the nutritional value of foods<\/b><\/span><\/span>, not just their mass or caloric content. <\/span><\/span>Nutritional life cycle assessments<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> (nLCA) integrate nutrition and environmental impact estimates, highlighting the <\/span><\/span>bioavailability and digestibility of nutrients<\/b><\/span><\/span> from animal-based products compared to plant-based ones. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In conclusion, <\/span><\/span>simplistic metrics fail to capture livestock production’s true impact and benefits<\/b><\/span><\/span>. Assessing livestock products requires <\/span><\/span>a<\/b><\/span><\/span> multifaceted approach<\/b><\/span><\/span>, considering their broader value in the food system, including nutrition, biodiversity, soil health, land stewardship, and community support.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
