Due to its nourishing role, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>animal protein sources<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> have historically <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/af\/article\/8\/3\/5\/5048762\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #00000a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">played <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #00000a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>an important role<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b> in human diets<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">However, in <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>high-income regions with<\/b><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>high food security<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, concerns about raising and killing animals, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>animal welfare<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> in intensive production, and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>environmental impacts<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> are driving the argument for <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>reduced meat consumption<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> or even avoidance. This shift is supported by the development of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>plant-based alternatives<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which are promoted as more environmentally friendly and morally responsible.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Malnutrition remains a significant global issue<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, with access to sufficient protein being crucial. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Meat&#8217;s nutritional benefits<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, including its high protein quality and priority vitamins and minerals content, are often cited by those critical of the argument that meat consumption needs to be restricted. They argue that <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>plant-based diets<\/b><\/span><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34090837\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #00000a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">lack sufficient amounts<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> of at least some of these nutrients. At the same time, certain experts also contend that the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/af\/article\/13\/2\/28\/7123478\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #00000a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">environmental benefits<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> of producing <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>sustainable meat<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> must be accounted for, such as improving soil health and promoting biodiversity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>practicality and sustainability of a global vegan diet are thus not to be taken for granted<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, as it can lead to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>unethical outcomes<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, especially in regions with limited arable land and the proper agricultural context. For example, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Bolivia&#8217;s quinoa cultivation<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> has led to land degradation, impacting local diets. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Ethical arguments against meat often overlook the economic and social impacts on farmers<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. A purely plant-based diet is not feasible for everyone due to land constraints and import costs. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">To address ethical concerns, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>the meat industry should improve communication and invest in scientific advances for better animal welfare<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. Maintaining some meat consumption with sustainable production methods can reduce harm and promote fairer food systems.
