“Cellular agriculture”: current gaps between facts and claims regarding “cell-based meat”.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A 2019 <\/span><\/span><\/span>RethinkX <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>report<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> predicted that the US meat and dairy industries would go bankrupt by 2030 due to the emergence of <\/span><\/span>‘cellular agriculture<\/b><\/span><\/span>.’ This is clearly not happening because <\/span><\/span>significant technical challenges are preventing the technology’s commercial viability<\/b><\/span><\/span>. Despite <\/span><\/span>billions invested<\/b><\/span><\/span> and hundreds of start-ups in the field, cellular agriculture faces hurdles like <\/span><\/span>high production costs and regulatory issues<\/b><\/span><\/span> (for instance, due to Europe’s regulations on genetically modified organisms). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The cost of goods, especially for <\/span><\/span>precision fermentation<\/b><\/span><\/span>, remains a major barrier. <\/span><\/span>Cell-based protein production is still not economically feasible<\/b><\/span><\/span>, as it requires further advances in <\/span><\/span>bioreactor technology<\/b><\/span><\/span> and culture media. Currently, only one <\/span><\/span>lab-based food product<\/b><\/span><\/span> is registered in Singapore. Without established production protocols, <\/span><\/span>claims about the nutritional and environmental benefits of cell-based products are unverified<\/b><\/span><\/span>. Moreover, “cell-based meat” is not legally considered ‘meat’ by US and European definitions, as it <\/span><\/span>does not match conventional nutrient compositions and qualities<\/b><\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Cellular agriculture also lacks the ecosystem benefits of traditional livestock farming<\/b><\/span><\/span> and could exacerbate <\/span><\/span>global inequality<\/b><\/span><\/span> by creating <\/span><\/span>luxury foods controlled by multinational corporations<\/b><\/span><\/span>. In addition, <\/span><\/span>consumer acceptance is often overestimated<\/b><\/span><\/span>, with many willing to try cell-based products but not eating them regularly. Rural consumers particularly express concerns about its <\/span><\/span>unnaturalness<\/b><\/span><\/span> and impact on traditional farming. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With the long-term health, safety, environmental, and market impacts of cell-based products still being unclear, <\/span><\/span>cellular agriculture technology does not seem to be a viable option<\/b><\/span><\/span> for the foreseeable future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
