Challenges and opportunities for defining the role and value of meat for our global society and economy.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Meat’s role in society<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> is heavily debated. On balance, <\/span><\/span><\/span>scientific<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> evidence supports<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> the critical role of animals in the environment and meat in <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>human nutrition<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, but alternative radical views spread through social media have influenced public beliefs. Despite <\/span><\/span><\/span>meat’s economic<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> and nutritional importance, there are now calls to drastically reduce or sometimes even eliminate its production, based on the argument that <\/span><\/span><\/span>plant-based foods<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> can replace meat to continue feeding a growing population. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Certain <\/span><\/span><\/span>media, NGOs, and policymakers<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> present meat excessively negatively<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>, citing evidence in a misleading way or <\/span><\/span><\/span>quoting isolated and ‘convenient’ studies based on questionable assumptions<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>. This has fueled <\/span><\/span><\/span>a debate dominated by ideology<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>. Scientific communication, however, must be clear, rigorous, and accessible to ensure that decisions are effectively<\/span><\/span><\/span> evidence-based<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In such a context of negativity, <\/span><\/span><\/span>reduced research funding and resources threaten the meat industry’s ability to innovate and improve efficiency, safety, quality, animal welfare, health, and environmental sustainability<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>. Addressing these challenges is critical as global meat production is projected <\/span><\/span><\/span>to reach 373 Mt<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> by 2030 and will need <\/span><\/span><\/span>to feed 2 billion more people<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> by 2050. Moreover, the <\/span><\/span><\/span>effective use of grazing animals<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> to improve soil health, carbon capture, water retention, and drought resilience must be part of the sustainability agenda. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Animal agriculture’s <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>societal role<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> spans health, economic, and <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>social considerations<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> and should be evaluated as such.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Collaboration between industry and academia is key to innovation<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>. Engaging young people, breaking traditional boundaries, and fostering collaboration at all levels are essential. At the same time, <\/span><\/span><\/span>open dialogue and widespread involvement will be necessary<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> to address the many challenges and find lasting solutions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
