A haemorrhage of farms is hitting Italy hard, where only the poultry sector is managing to keep up.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Among the problems that the new executive of the European Union (<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>EU<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">) will have to face is the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>progressive decline in meat production in the 27<\/b><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>partner countries<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. With Italy at the top of the list. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>This situation should concern everyone<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, even those who have given up eating meat. There is more than one reason for this, as we shall see. But let&#8217;s take things in order, starting with the figures from a recent analysis of the <a href=\"https:\/\/agriculture.ec.europa.eu\/document\/download\/048136bf-53f1-4f74-b92d-d13954196505_en?filename=short-term-outlook-spring-2024_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">future of agriculture<\/a> published by the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>European Commission DG Agriculture and Rural Development<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The document confirms that <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>European beef production fell by 3.9% in 2023<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. Even countries such as Spain and Ireland, which have been developing beef production for years, have reversed course. This trend is set to continue this year, with <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>a further 2.3% drop in meat availability forecast for the EU<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. There has also been a decline in the number of suckler cows, a &#8220;category&#8221; that ideally includes farms encouraged by<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b> EU green policies<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i><b><br \/>\nThe cattle sector<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>The case of Italy<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> stands out above all others, where <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>the beef sector has shrunk by 17% in a year<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, with a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>loss of 127,000 tonnes<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. This is due to the &#8220;fragility&#8221; of our <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>beef supply chain, which relies heavily on imports<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> of calves that are reared in our farms until the end of the production cycle. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>France and Poland<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, our <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>main suppliers of calves<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, have reduced their availability, resulting in a significant <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>reduction in beef production<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> in our country.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">In Italy, it is not only the decline in beef production that should be a cause for concern but also the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>progressive erosion of our animal heritage. From 2010 to date, more than 68,000 farms have closed their doors<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, while <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>the number of animals reared has fallen by 263,000<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, or almost 5%, over the same period.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i><b><br \/>\nThe pig sector<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The situation is similar, if not worse, for <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>pigs<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>The fall is 6.6%<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and concerns all countries, with the sole exception of Bulgaria. However, some indicators leave room for a possible recovery for this sector, but only towards the end of the year. They provided that the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnisostenibili.it\/en\/asf-intensive-farming-guarantee-of-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>African Swine Fever<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> emergency, affecting an increasing number of European countries, does not complicate the situation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The evolution of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>international markets<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> also weighs on the sector: China has reduced its imports, while the EU has lost competitiveness in important export markets, such as the US, Japan, and Australia. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>The number of pig farms in Italy has fallen<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">; there are now just over one hundred thousand, compared with 142 thousand about ten years ago. The <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>decline in purchasing power<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which is changing consumer preferences, is affecting the development of the sector in our country. This is the case, for example, with <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>raw ham<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which is declining and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>giving way to<\/b><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>cooked ham<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which is growing strongly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i><b><br \/>\nThe poultry sector<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>The only positive sign was for European poultry meat<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which, after two years of difficulties, regained momentum in 2023 with <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>growth of 2.1%.<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> This is thanks to the sector&#8217;s ability to adapt relatively quickly to changes in consumption and the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>efficiency of the supply chain<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which can offer a democratic, quality and safe product at competitive prices. It is no coincidence that poultry meat is the most consumed in the world and that Italy is on the same path.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Our country&#8217;s poultry meat production <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>increased by 7.7% in 2023<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, with a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>self-sufficiency rate of 105.5%<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. The number of farms is increasing, but <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>the number of chickens raised is decreasing<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> due to the progressive adaptation to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>animal welfare requirements<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. It is also worth noting that <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>the use of enriched cages for egg production is decreasing while using<\/b><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>free-range systems is increasing<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i><b><br \/>\nPossible consequences of the impoverishment of European livestock farming<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Faced with this <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>progressive impoverishment of European livestock farming<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, we must ask ourselves what the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>consequences<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> could be, starting with the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>growing demand for protein<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> from an increasingly populated world. As confirmed by the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>FAO and the OECD<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, the production of rice, wheat and maise, the main cereals in the human diet, could increase by 20%, but <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>animal production will also have to increase by 35%.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">It should not be forgotten that many plant-based foods are not available everywhere. However, in <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>areas that cannot produce food for direct human consumption, farms can be set up to<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> convert plant essences that would otherwise be of no nutritional interest into valuable proteins.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>The absence of animals is a reason for abandoning the land<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and depopulating marginal areas, with consequences for the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>degradation of forests<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and the neglect of those water regulation works that slow down <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>hydrogeological instability<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. Because the farmer, particularly <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>the breeder, is a guardian of the environment and territory<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, a role which, not by chance, has been recognised in Italy by a recent law.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">There is enough <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>to invite those in charge of agricultural policy to implement suitable instruments to reverse a path impoverishing us of resources whose strategic value is no longer worth remembering<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. The ideological vision of environmental protection guiding these decisions is proving ineffective. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>It is possible to reconcile the goals of environmental and economic sustainability<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. Livestock production chains have long since risen to the challenge, and the results are there. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">To obstruct their progress would be culpable.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The impoverishment of European livestock farming, which causes economic, social, and environmental damage, must be stopped.
