The organisation of the first EAAP workshop dedicated to companion animals<\/strong><\/a> provides a significant opportunity to reflect on the growing convergence between the pet sector and traditional livestock science<\/strong>. While these domains were once considered distinct in terms of purpose, methodology, and target species, the gap between them is narrowing\u2014at least from a<\/strong> scientific standpoint<\/strong>. The knowledge and technologies developed within the context of companion animals<\/strong> increasingly offer innovative insights and practical applications for animal production<\/strong>. At the same time, the scientific legacy of livestock research<\/strong> is making substantial contributions to the advancement of pet science<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


A TWO-WAY EXCHANGE<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key areas such as genetics, animal welfare and nutrition<\/strong> clearly illustrate this two-way exchange<\/strong>. Behavioural monitoring<\/strong> techniques using sensors, as well as the development of functional feeds<\/strong>, often originate or are first implemented in the pet sector, where high-value solutions can be tested rapidly. Once validated, these innovations are successfully adapted to meet the needs of livestock farming<\/strong>. Conversely, the high level of expertise accumulated in the field of livestock science\u2014 particularly in quantitative genetics<\/strong> and precision nutrition<\/strong>\u2014has greatly facilitated the adoption and refinement of scientific approaches within the pet sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


ONE HEALTH APPROACH CROSS-CUTTING NATURE AND TRAINING<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important point of convergence is the \u201cOne Health<\/strong>\u201d approach, which recognises the<\/strong> interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health<\/strong>. Research on gut microbiota, antimicrobial resistance, and zoonotic disease prevention now encompasses both companion and farmed animal species, helping to overcome outdated disciplinary differences<\/strong>. In terms of education<\/strong>, the shared veterinary practices<\/strong> across the two sectors provide common ground that is essential for training the next generation of professionals. Experience with companion animals<\/strong> often constitutes students\u2019 first practical exposure to veterinary medicine<\/strong>, but it also offers a valuable foundation for understanding health management and welfare in productive settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to its larger profit margins<\/strong>, it often serves as a testing ground for technological innovation<\/strong>. Solutions developed in this context\u2014from personalised nutrition to the valorisation of by-products<\/strong> and sustainable supply chains\u2014offer replicable models for livestock production as well<\/strong>, driving an evolution towards higher quality, traceability, and product differentiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a scientific and production landscape that is continuously evolving<\/strong>, where sectoral boundaries are increasingly permeable<\/strong>, fostering dialogue between livestock science and pet science is not merely an opportunity\u2014it is a necessity<\/strong>. Only through such integration can we effectively address future challenges with a more holistic, efficient, and sustainable perspective<\/p>\n\n\n\n
