The EU Nature Restoration Regulation promotes ecosystem recovery, involving sustainable livestock farming as a key ally in the ecological transition.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nature Restoration Regulation<\/strong>, approved about a year ago, is the first EU regulation<\/strong> that sets binding targets<\/strong> for the restoration of degraded ecosystems<\/strong>, particularly those with the greatest capacity to absorb carbon<\/strong> and prevent natural disasters<\/strong>. It is part of the EU Biodiversity Strategy<\/strong> and responds to the alarming state of nature in Europe, where more than 80% of habitats are in poor condition. Restoring wetlands<\/strong>, forests<\/strong>, grasslands<\/strong>, rivers<\/strong>, and marine ecosystems<\/strong> means not only protecting biodiversity<\/strong> but also safeguarding essential ecosystem services<\/strong> such as water purification<\/strong>, pollination<\/strong>, and flood protection<\/strong>. This regulation also contributes to European resilience<\/strong> and the fight against climate change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agricultural and livestock farming<\/strong> activities are directly involved: while they have historically contributed to ecosystem pressure<\/strong>, today they can become part of the solution. Regenerative and sustainable livestock farming<\/strong> can help maintain rural landscapes<\/strong>, preserve grasslands<\/strong>, and support the carbon cycle<\/strong> through smart management of pastures<\/strong> and manure<\/strong>. In this sense, the regulation offers an opportunity to rethink production models<\/strong>, rewarding those that integrate environmental<\/strong>, economic<\/strong>, and social goals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of this regulation lie deep reflections on nature<\/strong>, the human role in ecosystems<\/strong>, sustainability<\/strong>, and ecological and democratic literacy<\/strong>. The text embraces an evolutionary and dynamic view of nature<\/strong>: not a fixed entity or an ideal model to blindly imitate, but a system in constant transformation. It calls for moving beyond an anthropocentric perspective<\/strong>, reimagining humans \u2014 and with them, livestock farmers<\/strong> \u2014 as “positive ecosystem engineers<\/strong>“, capable of co-evolving with the environment<\/strong>. Livestock farming<\/strong>, if properly oriented, can support this co-evolution<\/strong>, contributing to the common good<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regulation is innovative<\/strong> and scientifically grounded<\/strong>, but without real political<\/strong>, economic<\/strong>, and educational commitment<\/strong>, it risks remaining ineffective. Involving the livestock sector<\/strong> in an educational and transformative process<\/strong> will also be essential. Educating decision-makers<\/strong> is necessary not only to protect biodiversity but also to safeguard rural communities<\/strong> \u2014 and, regrettably, today such education seems necessary even to secure the future of democracies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
