And with it, what would happen to food security for entire populations?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Artificial meat (<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">aka\u00a0<\/span>cultured meat)\u00a0<\/strong>is widely promoted as a\u00a0revolutionary food technology, praised for its potential to\u00a0reduce environmental harm,\u00a0prevent animal slaughter, and \u201c<strong>feed the world<\/strong>\u201d. While its technical, economic and environmental merits are actively debated, one crucial aspect remains largely overlooked: <strong>food sovereignty<\/strong>. This is particularly important in the context of <strong>developing countries<\/strong>, where food is not merely a commodity but a foundation of <strong>culture, livelihood and community resilience<\/strong>. Beyond <strong>performance<\/strong> metrics, we must ask what cultured meat means for justice, autonomy and <strong>long-term sustainability<\/strong> in our <strong>food systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dominant narrative around artificial meat focuses on <strong>efficiency<\/strong> and <strong>nutrient provision<\/strong>. Yet <strong>hunger<\/strong> is rarely a consequence of insufficient <strong>food production<\/strong>\u2014it is the result of <strong>economic inequality<\/strong>. Artificial meat reflects a <strong>rich-country mindset<\/strong> that treats food as a <strong>packaged product<\/strong> rather than a social, cultural and ecological relationship. If food becomes further detached from <strong>land<\/strong> and <strong>tradition<\/strong>, <strong>consumer choice<\/strong> risks being reduced to a narrow range of <strong>corporate brands<\/strong> rather than <strong>locally rooted options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>social implications<\/strong> are equally concerning. Artificial meat depends on <strong>high-tech infrastructure, <\/strong>patents and <strong>specialised expertise<\/strong>\u2014concentrated in the hands of <strong>multinational corporations. Small-scale farmers, pastoralists and traditional producers<\/strong> are unlikely to access or control such technologies, increasing their <strong>marginalisation<\/strong>. Claims that <strong>farmers<\/strong> might become partners in artificial meat ventures often ignore the <strong>financial and structural barriers<\/strong> that make such participation unrealistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Food sovereignty<\/strong> relies on reciprocity between communities and producers. Cultured meat risks <strong>centralising power<\/strong> even further, allowing remote companies to source <strong>local resources<\/strong> while retaining <strong>decision-making authority<\/strong> elsewhere. Proprietary systems and <strong>intellectual property restrictions<\/strong> limit access to <strong>knowledge<\/strong>, preventing communities from governing the <strong>means of production<\/strong>. This erodes <strong>local expertise<\/strong> and weakens <strong>intergenerational knowledge transfer<\/strong>, undermining <strong>resilience<\/strong> in times of crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, despite its <strong>\u201cgreen\u201d branding<\/strong>, artificial meat remains an <strong>energy-intensive, industrial process<\/strong> detached from <strong>natural ecosystems<\/strong>. Artificial meat may offer <strong>technological innovation<\/strong>, but innovation alone is not enough.
