They belong to the broader group of <strong>antimicrobial<\/strong> <strong>compounds<\/strong>, used <strong>to treat infections<\/strong> caused by microorganisms, including fungi and protozoa. When however the use of these drugs is excessive or uncontrolled, they are likely to trigger phenomena of <strong>antimicrobial resistance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>veterinary field<\/strong>, since the 50s, they represent <strong>a fundamental means for the control of infectious diseases<\/strong>, thus contributing to the <strong>improvement of animal welfare<\/strong> and the <strong>safety<\/strong> of food products of animal origin. The advantages of using <strong>antibiotics<\/strong> are innumerable, even to <strong>human medicine<\/strong>, and many bacterial infections, that up to 50 years ago could kill a person, such as pneumonia, are no longer a danger.<\/p>\n<p>The development of <strong>resistance<\/strong> is in itself a normal <strong>evolutionary process<\/strong>, a result of genetic evolution which applies to microorganisms: with an <strong>excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics<\/strong>, however, the resistance phenomenon accelerates the natural tendency of microorganisms to \u201cdefend\u201d the active ingredients contained in drugs. The \u201cresistant\u201d bacteria, although harmless, move from one organism to another <strong>transmitting the resistance<\/strong> to a pathogenic organism of the new host.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 90s, the phenomenon has become increasingly widespread, to the point that in the first <strong>Global Report on antimicrobial resistance<\/strong> published by WHO in April 2014, the antibiotic resistance is identified as a \u201cserious and potential threat to public health\u201d. The <strong>development of resistant strains of bacteria<\/strong> makes it difficult to treat an increasingly wide range of infections quite common and easy to contract, with the result that even the most common and easy to cure diseases <strong>may potentially constitute serious risks<\/strong> to health.<\/p>\n<p>To reduce this danger, <strong>in 2006<\/strong>, <strong>the European Commission has banned the use of antibiotics in livestock for non-therapeutic purposes<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reach-compliance.eu\/english\/REACH-ME\/engine\/sources\/regulations\/1831-2003-EC.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">i.e. as growth promoters<\/a>) and has recently drafted <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/HTML\/?uri=CELEX:52015XC0911(01)&amp;from=EN\" target=\"_blank\">guidelines for their proper use<\/a>. Assuming that resorting to <strong>veterinary drugs<\/strong> is <strong>a prerequisite for animal welfare<\/strong>, their use must therefore be complementary to a good barn management practice and <strong>appropriate vaccination programs<\/strong>, making it possible to <strong>maintain the state of health<\/strong> of the animals and minimise the conditions that favour the emergence of diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>antibiotic-resistance<\/strong> issue is also at the centre of many <strong>information campaigns<\/strong> for consumers by the various governments and the WHO itself, as well as the subject of <strong>institutional strategies<\/strong> aimed at the promotion of the <strong>appropriate use of antimicrobial drugs<\/strong> protocols.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Sustainable Meat Project<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":8030,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[680,621],"tags":[1457,805,1596,1597,1598],"class_list":["post-8029","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-food-safety-security","category-italian-zootechnics","tag-antibiotic-resistance","tag-antibiotics","tag-antimicrobial-resistance","tag-appropriate-use-of-antimicrobial-drugs","tag-veterinary-drugs"],"aioseo_notices":[],"aioseo_head":"\n\t\t<!-- All in One SEO 4.9.10 -
